New Support for Alexandria’s Struggling Readers

Alexandria Tutoring Consortium Hires New Program Director

ALEXANDRIA, VA, November 10, 2016 -- The Alexandria Tutoring Consortium (ATC) is pleased to announce that it recently selected Karen T. White of Alexandria, Virginia to fill its newly established Program Director position. She will provide the day-to-day management and oversight of the program that trains nearly 200 volunteers in a University of Virginia curriculum to help struggling readers in kindergarten and first grade improve their literacy skills. About the appointment, Ms White said,  “I am very pleased to be at the ATC.  The ability to read is the biggest factor of a child’s success in school—and life!  I look forward to helping ATC achieve its goal to have all children able to read by third grade.”

Ms. White joined the ATC team with more than 14 years of non-profit experience in communications management, budget management, and event planning.  Most recently, Ms. White served two years as the events manager and executive assistant to the Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities, a Presidential Commission.   In Alexandria she was a Board member of The RunningBrooke Fund for five years, served as a weekly reading tutor for students at TC Williams High School and Douglas MacArthur Elementary schools, and was a volunteer with Together We Bake and the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria.  Karen and her husband Tom are the parents of two daughters who attended Alexandria City Public Schools and graduated from TC Williams High School.

ATC has provided tutoring in Alexandria for almost 20 years.  It recruits and trains volunteers to tutor Alexandria public school struggling readers in kindergarten and first grade.  For more information, visit the website at:
