For the time being, ATC will be offering its Book Buddies program virtually. Because of school closings, tutors and students are no longer able to meet in person during the school day. However, they are finding new ways to connect via Zoom, FaceTime, or phone calls. With virtual tutoring, students continue to receive level-appropriate reading materials and tailored reading instruction in their own homes. Coordinators and tutors are finding creative ways to convert the Book Buddies curriculum to a virtual format. For instance, exercises like Word Sorts can now take place on a shared screen between tutors and students. Additionally, more flexible student and tutor schedules allows for longer tutoring sessions. Besides improving student understanding of reading material, longer sessions can also promote deeper student-tutor relationships.
For the 2020-2021 school year, ATC is preparing to offer either traditional, in-person reading tutoring or, if necessary, virtual tutoring.
