After COVID-19 closed the schools in March, ATC shifted to a virtual Book Buddies program. Tutors and students connected via Zoom or FaceTime and kept working hard to improve students’ skills. Virtual tutoring was very successful, with 91% of participating students ending the year reading on grade level.
ATC is offering virtual tutoring in the 2020-2021 school year, with students receiving level-appropriate reading materials and tailored reading instruction in their own homes. ATC staff has converted the typical Book Buddies curriculum to a virtual format. For instance, exercises like Word Sorts can now take place on a shared screen between tutors and students. Additionally, more flexible student and tutor schedules allows for longer tutoring sessions.
